When “Sahara” flopped, Cussler sued the producers for failing to give him complete control of the script. He lost and was ordered to pay $13.9 million in legal fees.

P.L. Travers - Mary Poppins

Travers had a lot of notes for the Disney adaptation of her kid’s book series but they were ignored despite her having script approval. She hated the animated sequences and let’s just say the happy ending shown in the Disney biopic “Saving Mr. Banks” was nothing like what happened in real life when Travers left the premier in tears.

Stephen King - The Shining

King didn’t think director Stanley Kubrick understood the supernatural aspects of his book, and hated how it became a domestic tragedy.

Anne Rice - Queen of the Damned

Rice was against the casting of Tom Cruise in another adaptation of her work, “Interview with the Vampire”, but she ended up loving his performance. The same wasn’t true for “Queen of the Damned” which she said mutilated her book.

Winston Groom - Forrest Gump

Groom was denied the 3% profit he was supposed to get according to his contract because producers claimed the movie didn’t turn a profit and wasn’t mentioned in any of the Academy Awards acceptance speeches. Needless to say, he wasn’t a fan.

J.D. Salinger - My Foolish Heart

Salinger wasn’t into this adaptation of his short story “Uncle Wiggly in Connecticut”, and that might be why he never let any of this other works be adapted.

6 Authors Who Hated Their Book's Movie Adaptation (11 pics)

Anthony Burgess - A Clockwork Orange

Burgess said of the adaptation : “The film made it easy for readers of the book to misunderstand what it was about, and the misunderstanding will pursue me till I die. I should not have written the book because of this danger of misinterpretation.”

7 Authors Who Hated Their Book's Movie Adaptation (11 pics)

Bret Easton Ellis - American Psycho

Ellis is another who mostly hates adaptations of his work: “I think the problem with American Psycho was that it was conceived as a novel, as a literary work with a very unreliable narrator at the center of it and the medium of film demands answers. It demands answers. You can be as ambiguous as you want with a movie, but it doesn’t matter — we’re still looking at it.”

8 Authors Who Hated Their Book's Movie Adaptation (11 pics)

Roald Dahl - Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory

Dahl wasn’t a fan of Gene Wilder’s take on his character, and called his performance “pretentious”.

9 Authors Who Hated Their Book's Movie Adaptation (11 pics)

Ken Keesey - One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest

Keesey was originally involved in the production of his novel’s adaptation but left after two weeks and claimed to have never seen the end product.

10 Authors Who Hated Their Book's Movie Adaptation (11 pics)

Richard Matheson - I Am Legend

Matheson joins the list of control freaks that just couldn’t let go: “I don't know why Hollywood is fascinated by my book when they never care to film it as I wrote it.”
