In 1828, Noah Webster published a dictionary with 'spelling reform' which removed some of (what he saw as) the inconsistencies in British spelling. He removed what he considered superfluous letters, for example from colour and neighbour.
Nearly 200 years later we have a generation who pepper the language, not with superfluous letters but with superfluous words. E.g. 'like'and,'literally' and who use terms such as 'based off of' instead of the SHORTER original, 'based on'. They also torture the language with the imbecilic 'on accident'.
Mr Webster must be turning his his grave (figuratively, not literally).
