These incredible photos were made on February 3, 1984, when an American astronaut Bruce McCandless II made the first untethered free flight in history. This mission marked the first checkout of the Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU) and Manipulator Foot Restraint (MFR). McCandless made the first untethered free flight on each of the two MMUs carried on board and ventured out 320 feet (98 m) from the orbiter. Years later the NASA has decided that MMU was too dangerous for astronauts and it was never used again.

First to break the four minute mile, first to break 50 mph, 100mph, then 200 mph, then 500 mph, first to fly around the world, first to break the sound barrier, first man to step foot on the moon.... Being first marks your place in history.

That could be dangerous. One thing goes wrong and you're a permanent part of space. 14

SHIT!!!!!! I typed this long reply to Jimmy and it did not post!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHH
HH !!

OK here is the really really really short version...We as a country were motivated by the U.S.S.R. (C.C.C.P. to the industry folks) being so aggressive. So The President, Congress and the Newly combined factions of space rocket and science branches of our Government to become NASA were given a blank check and power to compete and beat the Russians by any means in the space race.

One couldn't possibly feel more alone than in that situation. It would be scary enough for a monkey, who would have been frightened of falling. But for a human who completely understands the danger involved of possibly floating alone in space until he took his last breath it must have been totally terrifying. Yet, he did it. The combined emotions of being scared shitless while being exhaustingly exhilarated must have left his heart about one molecule away from pounding out of his body.
