#1 is total bul$#!+. Most of the stars you can see are a few thousand years old or less, but they have lifespans in the billions of years.

Exactly right. Most of the stars you can see are <1000 ly away, ergo, you're seeing them as they were 1000 years ago or less...and stars live BILLIONS of years.

Some of them are dead, certainly, but a tiny % of the furthest, brightest stars only.
