Watching american movies and commercials nowadays, gives the impression of coloured folks being 50% of the americans. The 80s don't appear that progressive...

Understand that most of American media today is progressive propaganda. They WANT to convey a certain image of the US. This is intentional.

For example, <8% (depending on the survey) of the US is gay, yet every TV show has a gay character or characters as one of the primary characters.
Less than 0.5% of the US is transgender, yet transgender people appear significantly in media and the news.
