While there was no fully functioning government in place, men such as Franklin, Jefferson, Madison and other politicians did their part. Yes, there were militias who fought bravely and of their own accord. But most colonists were either loyalists or completely apathetic to the cause until Thomas Paine published Common Sense in 1776.

I have as much hatred as anyone alive for those responsible for our government's bad behavior, but no one should be stupid enough to ignore the need for taxation, the rule of law, and a certain singularity of purpose. People who think as these images suggest can go f*ck themselves with a red hot poker. In fact, they may want to read Common Sense, because they are in desperate need of an education:
