Why would you need to cut the concrete???
It works as a base exactly the same as the concrete bricks... Aesthetics?

Fire bricks are made with refractory cement to withstand high temperatures. Regular concrete would eventually fall apart, or it could explode in the right conditions. Also by using bricks you get extra oxygen through the gaps to feed the fire.

Yeah, right. Because the average homeowner has a 30cm concrete saw, brick cutters, a mason's mallet, concrete tamper, a stone file & cold chisels in their tool shed.
