One of the Kyoto University's oldest dormitories was built in 1913.
The dormitory is self-administered by the students.
I think it is the main reason why it looks like a slum building.
On other hand students have to pay a very low monthly fee of $27 to live there.

A 24-year-old Lebanese American Miss Michigan Rima Fakih is now officially Miss USA 2010.
A couple of days ago I showed you all the contestants - Miss USA 2010 Contestants (51 pics).
And frankly Rima Fakih was not on my winner list.
But ok, I agree that she is very cute.
Following the pageant, Internet entertainment media directed attention a website featuring a 2007 "Stripper 101" pole dancing contest sponsored by Detroit radio station WKQI and won by Fakih.
WKQI said they had been contacted by representatives of the Miss Universe Organization, requesting additional photographs and information about the contest.
The station expressed their support for Fakih, adding "the photos taken from our website are no more provocative than those on the Miss USA website."
