I don't understand why they didn't either tow or drive these cars out. I'm sure most of them could have been repaired and sold on, before they were smashed with that bulldozer.

It is all to do with insurance...
Though it could have been more beneficial if the insurance company salvaged and resold the cars at cut down prices rather than smashing them like this.
...or may be it is against the crazy laws?

They better give these cars to people who can't afford it, instead of smacking them to pieces with these dozers.

right because maintenance on a BMW is so cheap....what a foolish comment.

It would be due to both insurance and WH&S laws. Derailed trains would be considered too unstable for personnel to enter, train lines need to be cleared asap, cars covered under insurance... cheaper to scrap them and clear the lines.
