I think everyone was expecting a huge explosion. Propane needs to oxidize with, guess what...oxygen, which, in the lava is quite low. As soon as the hot gas resurfaced, it burned off. That's what the bursts of flame were, the hot propane burning off. So, when you think about it, it makes sense that what you were seeing was all that should have been expected.
