btw: the symbols are acutally for light bulbs not LEDs /smartass:off

Here be spoilers:
of course every thing in the setup is rigged, the biggest part is probably the microcontroller hidden in the power connector

layman's explanation: the switches never really break the circuit, but rather switch a row of different resistors, from the resulting resistance the microcontroller knows which LED to light
