A 1.4 metre suspected carpet python was spotted dangling upside down eating a possum as tourists looked on amazed. The snake managed to get the whole thing down and it was a truly awe inspiring yet terrifying sight.

Not quite sure what that animal is, AC, but it's definitely not a possum. Opossums are not even half the size of that thing in the pictures.

No real points of reference, but the possums here in NZ appear to be that big.

Most definitely a possum. You are confusing the Ringtailed Possum from Australia with it's North American counter part the Common Opossum or Virginia Opossum. All of which are marsupials; the latter being the only North American variety.
