Monticello Dam is a dam in Napa County, California, United States constructed between 1953 and 1957.
It is famous for its uncontrolled spillway with a rate of 48,400 cubic feet per second (1370 m³/s) and a diameter at the lip of 87 ft (27 m).

that first picture is photoshopped. There is no bridge over it. But this used to scare the crap out of me when I was a little kid. The locals call it the glory hole! I always was afraid of swimming in this lake! 15

@14 Kinda obvious if you think about it. It's there for exactly the same reason the overflow outlet is there on a sink or bath. If the reservoir gets too full it automatically flows out the spillway.
