On the QR main line near Bundaberg there's a very interesting railroad crossing. The crossing utilizes a drawbridge mechanism that allows two different routes to intersect and it's something you have to see to believe.

How the hell is this cheaper or more practical than a normal rail crossing like this one????

QR (Queensland Rail) was there first. The sugar cane rail came latter.
I'm speculating but, maybe there was a bit of squabbling over who would be responsible for maintenance, as an example. After all, there wasn't a higher maintenance intersection before the cane rail came along. So maybe it was cheaper to build this unorthodox draw bridge set up to avoid paying trumped up fees to a competing railroad.

Again, just a thought.
