Pew pew pew!! Take that Americans. 05

Whats the deal whit Pearl Harbor?
Why are we STILL today being feed with history's and pics?
Is it because the Japanese did an American thing, and attacked unannounced?
Giving the enemy no chans to defent itself...

At least the Japanese had the god sense to invaded a military base.
And not civilian woman and children in some poor country, like Afghanistan or somewhere like that..

There goes America VS Rest Of The World shit again...
Don't you people understand that it's useless to argue with the Americans about war and shit? They've never been into major conflicts except Vietnam and Iraq, and can't show nothing else. No, seriously: Normandy, Pearl Harbor, and they think it's enough to say that THEY have freed THE SOVIET UNION from fascism)))

Truth is that despite being an oppressive, murderous regime Soviet Union did most of the fighting in WWII. It was also them who engaged and destroyed the bulk of German forces, made most of the territorial advances and sacrificed more soldiers then Americans had in service. As both were on the same side, both can say that they have won the war (as a coalition that included 15 other countries) even if the American contribution to the European theatre was done mostly by making Hollywood films about it.

As for Sweden having a say - sorry, the last time Sweden could have been counted as a military power was under the reign of Gustavus III when muskets and swords were the weapons of choice. And yes, Swedes were a superpower back then, unfortunately Americans have more tanks in storage today then there are Swedish combat soldiers, so I think that one has to acknowledge that Swedish opinion about US military operations counts about as much as a fart in a tornado.

Now that's embarrassing. Admitting that you're trolling for attention is clearly outlined in Chapter I of the pamphlet entitled, "How to be an Effective Internet Troll: You're The Coolest". You've now blown your cover, your motive, and most likely a goat or two. Study harder next time, and we'll see you next semester, SS. 03

Oh Kotlet, your vision is skewed. Yes, the Soviet Union lost more soldiers (and civilians)than anyone. Apparently they got their asses kicked a lot. They lost more people in the assault of Leningrad than most countries lost all together. The US fought on all fronts, including Europe, Africa and the Pacific. Rest assured, if the US had not entered the war it's likely that the Nazis would have prevailed. The same would be true if the Soviets had not defended themselves so hardily. Respect the history of all of our ancestors.

Eddy,
I don't for a second claim that US did not have a role to play, only that their contribution in Europe does not quite amount to what is firmly entrenched in the perception of an average American. I think that is fair to say that US has kept Japan from engaging their rear and has thus saved USSR, but similarly the Soviets are to thank for keeping Hitler busy. I can’t find the total number of Germans involved in the Eastern Front vs. Western Front, but the total German casualty figure in the East is at about 4.9 million with 5.5 total military casualties in the entire war. This means that about 80% of German casualties were caused by the Russians. Add to that the fact that the allies on the Western Front included Brits, Canadians, French and others and the American contribution there does not reflect Hollywood at all.

"I think that is fair to say that US has kept Japan from engaging their rear and has thus saved USSR, but similarly the Soviets are to thank for keeping Hitler busy."

The Soviets and the Japanese had a non-aggression pact with one another during most of the war, up until the last months. Stalin had agreed to enter the war against Japan within three months of the end of the war in Europe, and finally moved against the Japanese in Manchuria on August 9, 1945, which was exactly three months after the German surrender. Some speculate that Stalin was afraid the Americans would finish the Japanese without his help, and he would miss out on the division of spoils. Regardless, he didn't have to worry about fighting a two-front war. America, Britain, and their allies didn't have that luxury.

"Add to that the fact that the allies on the Western Front included Brits, Canadians, French and others... "

Of course it did, but Americans contributed more men and material to the European theater than the other Allied nations did. That is why it was agreed among the Allies that the Supreme Allied Commander would be an American (Eisenhower). And that fact in no way diminishes the contribution of those other nations. France was occupied, and could only contribute the Free French forces who had escaped the surrender. Britain was strained militarily and financially and could not hope to contribute as much as the U.S.

"...their contribution in Europe does not quite amount to what is firmly entrenched in the perception of an average American."

What do you think the average American thinks about that war? Do you believe most Americans think that America fought the war alone? I seriously doubt that. Plenty of Americans don't know as much about WWII as they should, but I doubt many think we had no allies.

You mention Hollywood's influence on American perceptions more than once, but its not as if Hollywood ONLY does films about Americans in WWII (see "The Longest Day", "A Bridge Too Far", "Mrs. Miniver", etc).

"First pic was impressive, but did the Japanese really take it?"

Not sure about that one. It wasn't taken on the day of the attack, because an aircraft carrier is visible in the upper right, and no U.S. carriers were in port when the attack occurred. Very impressive though, as you said.
