There's a swastika on the zeppelin because there was a functioning airship route between Frankfurt, Germany and New York City (or more precisely Lakehurst, I believe) during the 1920's and 30's. During that period the German Luftschiffbau Zeppelin GmbH constructed a "Luftshiff" or airship for the US. It was the technological flagship (how fitting in this context :D ) of the Third Reich. The voyage was quicker than by boat (81 hours) and was popular among high society.
