I believe this is a cultural experiance. Seeing how the locals get down with their exotic traditions/behavior and what-not. Everybody does nasty stuff though, so don't judge them.

Go to a slaughterhouse and see how your steak is handled while its still alive.
The joint exercise lets you share cultures, and you get to learn how to get your hands on different animals, prepare them and eat on the go if need be. All they did was make it into a kind of ritual... make the experience more pleasant.
