Coober Pedy isn't exactly a well know Australian city and that's because it's underground. The city was designed as a place to go for Australians to escape the heat and have a good time while they're at it.

The entrance doesn't look too impressive. What's impressive is what lies underneath it, though.

Coober pedy is a opal mining town producing some of the worlds best opal. Being in the South Australian outback it is very hot . Some opal shops in the main street have a door which leads to their working mines.

CooberPedy is one of the worlds largest opal deposits. It exists because of the opals.
Miners created the town....as most mining towns over the years. It is mostly underground
because CooberPedy is in BFE.....a LONG way from any other towns. Therefore it's cheaper
to build underground then import materials for surface dwellings. While there is lodging for
tourists tourism is NOT a major industry. All those 'holes in the ground' are shafts dug by
miners looking for opals. The place is a hot barren dusty dirty desert and if it weren't for the
opals it likely would not exist.
