The biggest problem with the American health care system is how badly the hospitals fuck everyone over. Need a $5 sling? We'll charge you $200+.

Love my Brazil, health care here is for free. We have "SUS", the best public health care system of the world. You can make any health treatment and pay absolutely nothing for it. Besides, the private health care system is not so expensive like this.

In reply to #3, and all: These are real bills, but nobody (intelligent) ever pays the amount indicated.
To be clear, NOBODY is refused care, ever. In many states it would even be illegal for facilities to refuse care, even if someone stated clearly "I have no insurance".
Further, since these markups are 'vapor', it's not like the hospitals can or will pass these costs along to other patients.

Those prices are grossly inflated for medical claim reasons, as no insurer nor the government (Medicare/Medicaid) will ever pay those prices.

Typically, even a single call to negotiate will reduce these prices by 50-80%.

Yes, it's a stupid system, but something like this (ridiculous, absurd markups intended to be discounted) exists in many systems in the US - retail pricing (10-20% discounts are assumed), trucking rates (75-90% discounts), car prices (20-30% discounts)...it's just how prices work here. Caveat emptor.

Oh, and for those morons that think "good thing I live in a country where medical care is free" - it's not free, it's being taken out of your taxes.

Styopa ... so you're glad you live in a country where you can haggle a $2 500 000 bill down to $500 000? You know what? I'd rather live in a country where I spend that amount in 100 years of taxes. And get treated better, too.

to styopa:

Our education is free, in most of latinamerica countries (Even Universities, yes), our health care is free (we even get brain surgery for free with no health insurance). You are correct, our bills end up paying for those things, your bills (U.S.A I assume) end up paying wars. :04:

In the UK we do pay for out healthcare through out Tax's, about 10% of your yearly salary go to it. But there are no bills, wife had a baby, plus OP, plus night in hospital plus a few fill and post OP / baby care and no bill.....

Overall the "State" system the US like to call the UK is pretty good. Even if you have a pre existing condition you will be seen and it will not cost you.

Overall the US system does scare the shit out of me when i am there on holiday or work.

To Styopa, you should check your facts before rambling on. The hospitals in America do refuse services. My wife(born and raised in America) was refused service until we could prove she was a U.S. citizen. Only because she had a foreign last name was she refused service. It is an experience that I'll never forget. She passed out from the pain that her almost ruptured appendix was causing, and the the people at the hospital wouldn't even look at her until I had come back with her birth certificate. Goes to show that just because something is written in the lawbooks does not mean that people follow them.
