The 'wall' used to be flat. Earthquakes, tectonic plate shifts etc, have caused it to be in the upright position it's in now.

I know it sounds ridiculous, but when I saw a documentary about it, they said that the wall was in fact standing millions of years ago when the dinosaurs made that climb. They said that there is no evidence that tectonic plate shifting happened on that wall at all.

Maybe its wrong, but I remember being very impressed with that piece of information
