Along with two co-inventors, Michael Jackson patented these shoes in 1993. The abstract reads…

A system for allowing a shoe wearer to lean forwardly beyond his center of gravity by virtue of wearing a specially designed pair of shoes which will engage with a hitch member movably projectable through a stage surface. The shoes have a specially designed heel slot which can be detachably engaged with the hitch member by simply sliding the shoe wearer’s foot forward, thereby engaging with the hitch member.

Riiight!
It was the SHOES that made him flakey.
The fact that he lived in an amusement park, dressed like a bad comic book character, gave his children some of the goofiest names ever, was addicted to both prescription drugs and plastic surgery, ...and diddled little boys...all of THAT is absolutely normal.

I always thought that's how he did it. I always pictured the bolts much smaller though so they'd be less noticeable.
