Cymothoa exigua - weird parasite (16 pics)

Pics | 10 Sep, 2009 | Views: 7158 |  +3   |
Cymothoa exigua (Tongue eating lous) attaches itself to a fish's tongue.
It starts to suck blood through the claws on its front legs.
As it grows, less blood can reach the tongue and it atrophies.
That's when the parasite replaces the tongue attaching his body to the muscles.
The fish uses it like a normal tongue.

I used to gut & cook my own fish since I moved to Tokyo (mainly horse mackerel). They sell fresh for about $0.80 cents! The last 3 that I gutted had a nice fatty little parasite which you can see above in their gills (never thought to look at their tongues)... Since the 3rd one in a row from different stores over 4 months was infected, I haven't eaten fish at home again... :( dammit!
