Yes, when he grows up to kill his school friends, they will blame it on the video games (which he didn't play) 13

It's strange to remember how psychologically tormenting those kind of experiences were. Everyone at school had Star Trek cards except me so I begged my mom to get me some. Then one day before school she gave me a bag of Star Trek cards, I opened it as she drove away but they were the wrong cards. The kids all had the Next Generation style cards and these were Kirk and Spock, totally useless to me. I was crushed. I cried the whole day. Especially when I thought about how happy she seemed about the surprise she was getting me.

If you can't get him what he dreams for then get him whatever you can. But it shouldn't be packaged as his dream gift just so you can laugh at his disappointment.

What these parents did was a cruel thing to do to your own kid. What parent takes joy in seeing his own child heartbroken?

Back in the day I bought my 7 year old son a Sega Genesis game (which was the latest/greatest thing at the time). He'd wished for one so much. But I couldn't afford much back then. I boxed it up in a stupid puzzle box. When he opened it he was disappointed but thanked me for the puzzle. I told him to open it and we'd work on it together. When he opened it he found it was a new Sega Genesis. He was so surprised and happy he couldn't hold back tears.

That's how you surprise you own child. Not with the surprise of a broken heart!
