If you put an egg inside a jar full of vinegar and leave it there for seven days then you would see a very interesting phenomenon called a naked egg.

You can hard boil it first if you like, but this one is raw.

You can eat it afterward, although it might taste a bit sour. If you want to eat it, though, I would recommend soaking it in the refrigerator.

If you don't soak it as long, you can soften the shell, and it will harden again when it dries. We used to do this for the old egg-in-a-milk-bottle trick. After softening the shell, drop a loose wad of burning tissue paper into a quart glass milk bottle (if you can still find one these days), and quickly put the egg on top. The heat from the burning tissue will cause the air in the bottle to expand. Then when it cools and contracts, it will suck the egg into the bottle. Rinse out the ashes from the tissue and leave it to dry, the egg shell will harden and you have an egg in a bottle. Amaze your friends! 16

Yeah, we did this in a lab in my A&P class. The vinegar eats away at the shell leaving it "naked" like that and the egg actually absorbs in some of the vinegar which causes it to swell. And oh yeah, these things smell. 04

Yeah, this is great and all to have this information available, except my 10 year old was quite interested to see the extracurricular pictures that were also on this page, once he was passed looking at the egg pictures for his science experiment. Thanks for the warning! (sarcasm font)
