Thatching is the craft of building a roof with dry vegetation such as straw, water reed, sedge, rushes, or heather, layering the vegetation so as to shed water away from the inner roof.

Rain just runs off a thatched roof. They're very water resistant, have a very good insulation level, and pretty long lasting too.

You get 100+ years out of a roof like that.

Straw thatch will keep you dry for 30 years but the best thatch is Norfolk Reed thatch, that will last 80 years if you maintian it properly, but its bloody pricey.

Extensively used here in the South and throughout Africa as a whole. Not too expensive either as grass and reeds are plentiful. They are mostly built with nothing underneath. Totally water resistant, cool in summer and warm in winter.
