The American National Rifle Association estimated that in 1999 there were about 215,000,000 guns in American with about one gun in every second household. Messed up. Photographer Kyle Cassidy began to wonder who these people actually were and over two years undertook the task of photographing and interviewing 100 American gun owners in their homes.

i can see the hunting rifles (for hunting, obviously). i can even see the handguns (for defense).
but tell me, who in their right mind would think that civilians need to have a right to own assault rifles and machine guns? wtf?!

Good pictures! I'm just not surprised by people's anti-gun bias anymore. I own a few, and I carry one for self defense. It isn't careless -- it's proactive.

And assault rifles and machine guns are fun to shoot, provided you do so safely. As for the right to own them... the entire point of the 2nd amendment was to protect the people against their own potential tyrannical government. We fought against a strongly armed country (England) and won because we were equally as armed. If we need to ever do so again, do you really think people with shotguns and handguns could go against an illegal military force?

Assault rifles and a machine guns are the same thing, and it is very unlikely that any of those firearms above are Class 3 weapons (fully-automatic). Very few people go through the trouble to obtain them.

The AR-type rifles are more ergonomic than a hunting rifle and pretty decent work-horses. If you're going to own a rifle, it's just common sense to have a reliable one that works well with the human body.

Furthermore, The purpose of citizens owning effective weapons of defense, whether they be rifles, shotguns, or handguns, is to (1) enable our citizens to ensure that our nation remains free from a tyrannical government, (2) enable our citizens to use their own arms in forming a militia to defend this nation from a foreign invader, and (3) enable our citizens to use their own arms to defend each of their individual lives from the oppression of criminals (The Supreme Court ruled that the police have no responsibility to do so).

In short, human beings are tool-users. Humanity has advanced by using the best tool available for the job at hand. In the case of retaining a person's and nation's freedom, that tool happens to be a firearm best suited for the purpose of defense.

Remember that the only reason you are safe is because rough men (and women) stand ready to do violence on your behalf.

Actually, the picture with the Boston Terrier in the couch has a few Class 3 weapons. A few of those weapons have silencers. In the United States, we have the right to defend ourselves against the government. Something people in Iran cannot do.

If you don't trust yourself with firearms, nobody forces you. Those figures are estimates, and it averages out as every second residence, but in the real world, it is closer to every 7th residence. Some people have one, others have 4 or 5, some collectors have dozens, like the guy in his shorts. Most of his are quite old. It should also be noted that it isn't people like this that are out there shooting people. Owning a firearm doesn't make you predatory, just prepared.

Good job Surgere. I can't believe that my fellow liberals are still against guns. There is a reason for the second amendment, come on people. Must we educate you every time. Look back at history at the nations that disarmed there citizens. The worst atrocities in the age of man happened to people that were disarmed.

"Nah, what's messed up are those figures. I can't think of anybody that I know personally who would be careless enough to have a gun in their home."

That is the most ridiculous statement I've heard in a long time! How does it make you careless to own a gun? You think because you don't know anyone who owns a gun that no one does? or that its just those "crazy rednecks" that a "careful" person like you would never associate with. Give me a break. Many responsible and intelligent people, myself included, own guns for a variety of reasons (hunting, protection, competition).

Surgere:
Very well put! I just wanted to say that machine guns and Assault Rifles are NOT the same. Assault rifles can be (and often are) semi-automatic. The AK-47 and M-16 are examples of assault rifles, both have a semi auto setting. The civilian versions of these weapons are SA only and are still considered assault rifles. The M-60 (Rambo's gun) is a true machine gun.

Just because you have guns in your house does not make you unintelligent or irresponsible. I own lots of guns and I have a two bachelor's degrees and a doctorate.

MWarrior,
"I can't think of anybody that I know personally who would be careless enough to have a gun in their home."

Because mature gun owners are very careful and mature about their gun ownership. Their children are often better trained, experienced, and education about guns than most anti-gun adults.

The fact that the only people who you know are people who don't own a single gun among all of them tells me what sort of sad person you are. Democrat? Far left Liberal? You'll be the first to scream "protect me gun owners!" if this country ever gets invaded.

Because magazines pay them to take these pictures?
I'd guess most of these individuals do not 'parade' their guns outside their homes.

Unlikely, because they'll be busy Quisling to whoever is attacking.
