Collecting Sea Turtle Eggs in Costa Rica (12 pics)

Pics | 11 Oct, 2011 | Views: 3501 |  -183   |
One turtle egg can cost from $100-$300 USD per egg. After Costa Rica became the new hub for drug trafficking the smugglers have added sea turtle eggs to their list. This market is also very profitable and much less dangerous.

I`m from Costa Rica and I don`t like when somebody give wrong information. Only 1% of the eggs of the turtles is harvest by and Association of a little poor town called Ostional and is regulated by the Costa Rica goverment and enviromental Ministry. This asociation take care of the turtles in fact they protect the little turtles when they are born in order to don`t be eating by depredators. If you want to see the truth you can access to this link were they explain how it works: http://ostionalcr.tripod.com/i
nfo/pdf/ost_en.pdf

I usually dont like to talked in forums but I don`t like you said lies about my country Costa Rica and more if you are saying ridiculus things like each egg cost between $100 and $300, in that case everybody will be rich in that little town that only has necessities. 27

Usually I don't post in Acid Cow, but after I saw this madness, awful and completely wrong set of pictures I need to give the truly history about it.

In my lovely country we protect the turtles also other species. These pictures are from "ostional" a beautiful beach which is frequently visited by sea turtles. The government in association with the community created a program to bring the opportunity to gather only 1% of the turtles eggs for local commerce. At the same time the local people teach to all the tourists which visit this awesome place how they live in completely harmony with the environment.

Please 100 to 300$ per egg? Come on, if those numbers are real all the people on that beach will be a millionaire.

Check those links and judge by themselves

I demand acid cow to remove this post which is giving an offensive message to what my country truly represents. 46

It seems a good idea only 1% of the Eggs are Harvested to Help the people of this
Town. and then the new Born Turtles are protected back to the Sea.
If they wern`t protected their would be far far more lost than only 1%...

It seems to be a win win ,

what at first looked like a Sick Dump until we had the true story about the dump,,

Cheers WAILLY and VAKALOKA ... 04 04

I was in Costa Rica for a holiday and what I saw was that people really make an effort to protect nature. In the Tortuguero National Park sea turtles can lay their eggs in peace to prevent sea turtles from extinction and also it attracts a lot of tourists. There is a piece of information in the description missing.

Thanks to vakaloka and wailly for explaining the truth. I had a very good impression of your country. 04

I've made an acc here just to CURSE those fking retard ppl who is doing such a bad thing, don't care what you are saying coz they are protecting nature & shit, if I would come in your city and stole 10% of your kids it would be right?
some ppl are just mega idiots and do not deserve living on this planet

Hi micliapu welcome to the site.
Just firstly it was 1% not 10% , that is a big difference,
If taking 1% of the eggs can help the Children of this Town and the people too and in return they help protect the baby Turtles that hatch back to the Sea
this can only be a good thing.

But like you said if you came into one of our City`s and stole even 1% not 10%
of our Children how would that help anything , besides that they would be
to heavy to carry.............

Ok ok, I was about to burst out and say how bad I think this is, and that soon the turtles will also become extinct... But if it's regulated, and the babies are protected, I suppose I can't say much now... 51

there seem to be a LOT of turtles on the beach. don't seem too endangered to me. regulation is the way to go though, just like all other hunts, etc.

Seems regulated to me... I mean if it wasn't then the turtle population there would've already been depleted... and from the pics there are lots there 51

I've been working seven years with Indonesia sea turtle conservation program. As far as i know through the whole time i've spend with this creature, there is no reason for us to collect those turtle eggs for any kind of purpose. If you talk conservation, its mean full protect! no matter how we found only 1% number of harvest produce hatchling.

In my site place, Berau Indonesia, Sangalaki and several Derawan island. We do total protect. If we find some sea turtle took the wrong spot for nesting, we relocate the eggs to a prefer place to avoid harvest failure. We do total protect considering that turtle facing massive exploitation in all over the world.

I think 1% harvest is not a proper reason to collect the eggs for local social-economic income. I much prefer to sale those "harvest" and ritual Nesting of sea turtle as a eco-tourism products like we are doing here to increase our local economic value without unwise exploitation among those sea turtle.

you can check out the program at http://turtle-foundation.org/P

Save the sea turtle 12
