I'm not sure the "Cash for Clunkers" picture belongs. The program got 690,114 pieces of junk off the road. The old cars got on average 15.8 mpg and their replacements 24.9 mpg, a fuel efficiency improvement of 58% and a comparable reduction in air pollution.
