This is brilliant. I'm sorry more people don't see the beauty in it.

We wear our pain like armor, and it weighs us down. We can remove it any time we like, but we hang onto it like it's the only thing we have.

The way I see it, this isn't really about a "loser who can't find a job", it's about a person giving up on their dreams, one by one, and becoming cynical as a result. I don't believe the author expects you to feel sorry for the main character, I believe the author wants you to identify with him in some small way. This strip is a call to action - don't let your dreams die, even if they make no sense to anyone but you.
