I agree this practice is strange and horrifying and I kinda hope that the introduction to these pictures was just unfortunate wording because these are not the "Deformed feet of Chinese women after the years of wearing tiny shoes".

So as not to undermine the suffering of these women I feel compelled to point out that this effect was intentionally achieved by breaking arches and/or toes, wrapping them in a bent position and other drastic measures in order to achieve the desired smallness. Not continuously jamming feet into shoes that were too small for the wearers.

K, I'm stepping off the soapbox now. As you were. Smoke 'em if ya got 'em.
