It might be better, but competition won't allow plain packaging. National brands want to keep their top spot, part of that is the impulsive "visual appeal" of a colorful label to the appropriate target group. They must stand out over everyone else..Nesquik is a good example. If those products were stocked side by side and the plain label is a lot cheaper, I would buy the plain label of course.

I'm a simple person. The plain ones look just fine to me. However, I know from working in retail, the better looking product will sell before the cheap product.

People want to see what they're buying. If somebody didn't know that the brand "Pringles" were potato chips, the company would lose a potential sale since the buyer wouldn't know what it was. Sure they could probably find out by reading the box more closely, but most people are lazy.
