Sam Rodia, an Italian immigrant was a very lonely man. He was divorced and wasn't allowed to see his kids. He started to build Watts Towers 50 years ago and has spent 33 years completing the project of his life. The towers are useless but we may consider them as a piece of art.

According to an urban legend, the towers are a representation of the human DNA helix, and somehow the aliens inspired Rodia to build them!

He uses a lot of flowers and heart motifs as well as very bright and cheerful colors. These aren't things a depressed or lonely person would use, rather a father doing something nice for his children.

He can't see his kids so he builds towers. Sounds a lirttle bit mental to me, which is probably why he can't see his kids...
