As you may know, Times Square is now officially a pedestrian-only zone and it will be massively overhauled in 2012. But before that NYC Department of Transportation decided to “refresh and revive” the streetscape and accepted 150 design submissions to revamp Times Square.
Molly Dilworth was recently awarded the first prize for her proposal “Cool Water, Hot Island”.
Her design is a graphical representation of NASA’s infrared satellite data of Manhattan, and looks like a blue river flowing down Broadway.

Hideous. But then Times Square is hideous and gaudy so will probably fit right in

What is it about a collection of 100 foot high billboards and cheesy neon advertisements that makes Times Square such an icon?

JDPower,
Times Square is about the people , the art and the pulse of the city. If you think that it is just a billboard you may want to grow up and culture your self a bit.

Only an American could consider the hideous commercialised mess of Times Square 'Culture', a place where painting a big blue strip on the road is supposed to be of artistic merit and IMPROVE the look of the place ffs. It's about commercialism and tourism, nothing more. And even if it is the pulse of the city, are you really proud that its sold its soul and American heritage to multi nationals for the purpose of making money by plastering everything with hideous neon crap everywhere?
