Atari is synonymous with video games, but has disappeared from the gaming scene. It was one of the first companies to produce arcade video games for gaming at home. Atari was created by Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney in 1972 and the first game they released was a huge success, a game called Pong. By 1975 Atari was a household brand and there were many gaming companies who tried to copy Pong. Problems arose when they were sued by Magnavox who said that Pong was their idea.

Atari then designed the Atari 2600, a console, which was compatible with all Atari games. Atari 2600 was then sold to Warner Communications where some arguments ensued over the way the company was going and Bushnell left the company in 1978. The company branched out and developed home computers, the Atari 800 and 400, but did not enjoy the same success as the Apple II. In 1983, the video game crash prompted Warner Communications to try and sell Atari video division and Tamriel Technology bought them in 1984.

Tamriel Technology developed a range of consoles which included the Atari ST, Atari 65XE and the Atari 130X. Later they also released Atari 2600 jr and Atari 7800 which made a substantial profit. The Atari Lynx was released in 1989, which was a handheld gaming device, but was trumped by Nintendo’s Game Boy. After a merger with JTS in 1996 the Atari name was sold to Hasbro. In 2000 they were sold once again to Infogrames. Atari has had an interesting, but turbulent history, and they have disappeared from the gaming scene while PS4 and Xbox took the lead.

The Pressing Comeback Question

The question on everybody’s lips is can Atari make a comeback? In June this year a rather interesting video appeared on their website, a mere 21 seconds long feature that covered the latest in Atari gaming. The video showed a woodgrain console, reminiscent of their retro days with the Atari logo illuminated on it. All the message said is “coming soon” and if anyone wanted more information they would need to enter their email in order to get more information. For Atari fans the Jaguar is the last console they knew, and that was way back in 1993, so what was going on. Unlike Canadian online slots and other games and platforms that have kept up the times, Atari has lagged, but the short clip has gotten fans excited once more.

The CEO of Atari, Fred Chesnais had an exclusive interview with VentureBeat where he confirmed that Atari will be launching a new console. The company had filed for bankruptcy in 2013, but seems that it is now back and ready for action. The company has not released any details except that it will be based on PC technology.

Will it Measure Up?

It is difficult to determine if the new console will be targeting the latest gaming technology or if it will be similar to a self-contained clone which can be bought at any store. Atari fans are asking if the new console will only be compatible with Atari games or will it allow other developers to create games. Fans are also wondering if the new Atari Box will be able to handle the latest games such as Call of Duty.

This is welcome news for the gaming world and everyone is hoping that this comeback will be the continued future of Atari.
